On view from 09.03.24 - 10.18.24: Total Eclipse
Borderland Collective’s Mark Menjivar and Jason Reed’s exhibition entitled All the Sacrifices You’ve Made / Todos Los Sacrificios Que Has Hecho is on view for the fall semester at Sabinal Gallery. It opens on August 22nd and runs through November 4th.
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse occurred in Central Texas. Texas State University’s Photography Program responded to this once-in-a-lifetime celestial phenomenon.
The resulting photographs were curated and formatted into a newspaper, drawing inspiration from the writing and visuals of two women: Annie Dilliard and Sarah Charlesworth. Annie Dilliard’s essay “Total Eclipse,” written about the 1979 total eclipse, offered provocative distinctions between seeing and knowing. Sarah Charlesworth’s artwork “Arc of Total Eclipse, February 26, 1979” adressed the same eclipse by reproducing the front pages of 29 newspapers, removing everything by the masthead and photographs of the event.
This newspaper is an homage to their work and an artifact of a shared experience.
