On view from 10.02.23 - 11.03.23: Field Journal: Tucson

Charlie Kitchen’s exhibition entitled Field Journal: Tucson is on view for some time at the Sabinal Gallery.

Field Journal: Tucson continues Kitchen’s practice exploring the large format photographic process. This suite of photographs was produced over a month in southern Arizona. Kitchen’s work deconstructs the large format process, introducing a collage technique executed in-camera and in the field. This specific body of work explores previous themes in Kitchen’s work, as well as various forms of mark-making and how the representaion of such can be filtered through and represented by the photographic process.

Many of these images were created by means of mark making, which is then digitally converted and cut from black vinyl using a plotter. The vinyl is then adhered to a transparency that is inserted into the large format film holder before opening the shutter to expose the film. Overwhelmed by obligation to control every part of the production of my work, my hand remains present from the exposure and developing of the film, to the printing and the framing of the final prints.
